Great Barn Devon wedding: Emma & Kieran
It has been such a pleasure getting to know lovely Emma and Kieran in the lead up to their wedding, and it was absolutely wonderful to finally photograph the amazing day itself.
They chose the Great Barn in Devon for their wedding celebrations, and it was fantastic for me to return there, as it’s a particularly stunning Devon wedding venue and I love photographing there. Emma’s Dad made me laugh during the wedding speeches, with something about Emma and Kieran telling him about this amazing venue they’d discovered, called The Great Barn, and his reaction being along the lines of ‘perhaps we’ll decide whether it’s ‘great’ or not’ – and of course, coming to visit and 100% agreeing that yes, it’s pretty great indeed! It was perfect on the day, and the day itself was absolutely perfect the whole way through. From Kieran’s haircut with the groomsmen at the hotel in the morning, and Emma’s bridal preparations in the cottage at the Great Barn, to the pretty awe-inspiring ceremony in the barn itself, it really did make a momentous occasion of their wedding. The celebrations afterwards were just lovely, with a relaxed drinks reception, ice-creams and games in the gardens, followed by a wonderful wedding breakfast provided by Dartmoor Kitchen, and speeches that covered all the emotions, from heartfelt toasts to important absent loved ones, to an utterly hilarious best-men-rap-speech-summary that destroyed Kieran and made me laugh for the rest of the day.
The sunny afternoon extended on to a really gorgeous warm summer evening, and it was great to walk up behind the barn onto the hill with Emma and Kieran, and really get a sense of the Devon countryside all around us. I always love spending a little bit of time with each couple later in the day like this, as there are so few opportunities through the day to take time out together, and this is an ideal way to do it. It’s always a great time of evening for photographs in general, and I loved capturing some candid shots of everyone chatting and relaxing in the courtyard, as well as some relaxed big group photos.
Then the party got started, and it really did go from nought to about five hundred in less than sixty seconds. Emma and Kieran’s beautiful first dance was followed instantly by a sudden and loud injection of 90s drum and bass, and an instantly packed dance floor. Then we were treated to a half hour set from Kieran and the best men, whose band had the dance floor absolutely heaving. Huge kudos to the brilliant Exeter band New Heroes, who were not only kind enough to let the boys use all their equipment to perform with, but also managed to follow with their own set that was just as brilliant! It was all such a huge pleasure to photograph, and I absolutely loved being a part of this day. Big thanks to Laura Cullen for shooting alongside me as well! I’ll stop waffling now and leave you to enjoy the photographs, but thanks again to Emma and Kieran for inviting me to share this brilliant day. I can’t wait to finish editing all the rest of the images for you!
