Family photography at the beach
One of the best bits about being based in Devon, is how often I get to carry out family photography at the beach! When I am crunching around on the rocks or sand, with the sea splashing in the background, it never feels properly like I’m actually working. And the beach can make the most perfect location for your family photographs. It’s often somewhere that Devon locals spend a lot of their family time (well, you would, wouldn’t you?!). I think it’s always really lovely to have your family photography session somewhere that you would normally hang out together. The beach is always fun, which is obviously a really crucial part of a successful family session, and helps to create relaxed and natural images of you all enjoying yourselves. Plus, it is, of course, a really beautiful backdrop, with the sea sparkling in the background.
A very lovely friend gave a family photography gift voucher to this wonderful family. After chatting through location options, we decided on Budleigh Salterton beach. The early evening session meant that we caught the most beautiful end-of-day sunshine, with that soft golden light making everything particularly stunning to photograph. We threw stones into the sea, splashed about with the family dogs, built pebble towers and cuddled up for some family photographs together. It was such a perfect evening, and I loved the opportunity to photograph this gorgeous family at the beach together!
If you are considering having your family photography at the beach, then it’s really important to consider the time of day. Depending on the time of year, the light will be very bright and harsh in the middle of the day. This can make your photos really unflattering. You don’t want everyone squinting in the sun, or harsh shadows on faces. Nor do you all want to end up with sunburn! I would always highly recommend having your family photoshoot at the beach when the light is softer, either early in the morning, or later in the day. Look at how soft the light is in these evening photographs, and what beautiful tones it creates in the images. It would all look so different if we had had the photoshoot in the middle of the day.
