Best of 2024: family photography in the South West
I’m not sure I know where to start with this ‘best of 2024’. It has been a really extraordinary year for my family photography, and amazing for me to look back across now. I’ve been photographing families across the South West for nearly 15 years now, and this year really has been particularly special.
This year started with a goal of reducing the number of weddings I photograph, so that I could really focus on family photography. I’m keen to grow this side of the business and wind down to just covering a few weddings each year. Family photography has always been something that I offer (in fact, this is how I started things, before my wedding photography grew so huge). But over the years of photographing weddings, I’ve felt increasingly passionate about creating photographs for families. It’s always the thing that I lean into the most at weddings: the family connections and emotions associated with these. The bond that you see linking parents and children, the connections between siblings, it is all such a joy to photograph.
So it has been really special to make family photography the main focus of what I offer. To connect with families who are after these sort of images. Families who want photographs that celebrate who they are, that capture their relationships. Images that really sum up the essence of them as a family. It’s such a privilege to not just witness these moments, but create images from them. Photographing all this love and joy that exists in their every day lives.
I’ve photographed approximately 60 families this year, with photography sessions across the South West. There have been huge extended family groups on trips together, families celebrating big birthdays; and babies… so many adorable babies! I’ve caught up with families that I have had the pleasure of photographing several times before, and it’s particularly wonderful to see children growing and changing. There have been several particularly special photography sessions for various reasons. Some really poignant stories, shoots that I have poured my heart into. I’m really proud of what I have achieved this year.
This is a huge selection of images from across my family photography in the South West. I couldn’t narrow it down any further. It’s more than just a ‘best of family photography’ selection. It’s a set of photographs that sums up the year for me, that really captures the joy that it has been. Images from this particularly wonderful year photographing so, so many wonderful people. A huge and heartfelt thank you to every single family that has invited me to photograph them this year. It has been one that I won’t ever forget!
