A family photo session at Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis has to be one of my favourite places for family photo sessions. This shoot from earlier this year was about as perfect as it gets. Not just because of the beautiful soft spring sunlight, and the pretty harbour and beaches of Lyme Regis. Sophie, Dean, M & F were also just a total joy to photograph! We had a relaxed evening together, dodging seagulls with fish & chips sitting on the Cobb wall, playing by the beach huts, collecting stones on Monmouth beach and a final little explore around the harbour.

Planning for a family session in Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis has so many interesting spots all around a small area. It’s a great place to spend a couple of hours (or longer!) and just ideal for a family photography session. Monmouth Beach is usually a little quieter than the sandy areas, and has the lovely row of beach huts. It’s a great spot to find some space and has the added bonus of the large car park behind it. Then I love exploring along Lyme Regis’s historic Cobb. This famous breakwater is such an iconic spot, and gets the last of the evening sun. The harbour is always so beautiful here, and it’s a great area to wander around for some photos.

One of the key reasons this family photo session worked so well was because we kept everything so relaxed. Other than getting some chips, we had no fixed plan. I know the area well, and had some ideas about what and where would work well for the photos, but we really just let the evening unfold fairly naturally. I followed the action and photographed it all, just adding an occasional bit of guidance. At one point on the beach, as I pulled everyone together for a couple of group photos, M actually said with surprise, “I forgot we were having a photo shoot!”. It’s one of my favourite comments ever! This is the very best way for me to really capture your family in a natural way. I want you all to be your normal selves, and just let me get on with creating the photographs. The more that you let go and enjoy the time together, the better the end result will be.

We were lucky with the weather, but the location choice and the relaxed approach were the things that really made this session. Lyme Regis was an ideal backdrop for this relaxed family evening, and a really special family photography session.
